Veterinary Urinalysis

Problems within the urinary system, including the kidneys, are common in cats and dogs. The laboratory at Martensville Veterinary Hospital is fully equipped to perform in house urinalysis.  Analysis of the urine can identify kidney and liver disease, urinary tract infections, diabetes and even some cancers. Results can be obtained quickly, and a course of action can be made for your pet.

Our pet hospital has a state of the art SediVue urinalysis machine.  It delivers precise, high quality results with only a few drops of urine.  It has a special centrifuge, to protect delicate structures so less information is missed.  It uses advanced software to identify cells, crystals and bacteria.  It takes hundreds of high resolution photographs and saves them.  We also store the top photographs right in your pet’s file.  This helps us compare images over time, and monitor treatment success.

If your pet has a bacterial urinary tract infection, the veterinarians at Martensville Veterinary Hospital can send your pet’s urine sample away to a reference laboratory for further testing, including bacterial culture and sensitivity testing.  Culture and sensitivity testing confirm that a bacteria is causing the problem, identify which one, and show which antibiotic would be best and how long it should be given for.  Using the right antibiotic, at the right dose, for the right amount of time is very important for a faster cure for your pet.  It also helps prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
